How To Request a Teacher

Here's a few "pointers" from what I've learned from teacher
requesting experiences - of mine, and of those who DIDN'T get who they requested.
- NEVER write down YOUR OR the teacher's feelings, i.e. I really like the
teacher, the teacher and I are friends, the teacher really likes my child.
Personal feelings don't count UNLESS it's a negative, i.e. "this
teacher has preconceived notions about my child" "This teacher and
I have had run-ins on other occasions that I believe would be detrimental to
the parent/teacher relationship". etc.
- ALWAYS preface your request - or end it - with a statement that ties in
your request to the BEST educational option for your child's NEEDS, i.e.
this teacher has had previous experience with my child and has been able to
address his/her needs in a manner that has enabled him/her to excel. OR (one
I used) This teacher is known to my child already and I believe that this
will lessen the anxiety he feels in a new situation in order for him to
succeed at his best.
- If I were to write a request in a school that didn't accept requests, I'd
preface it with "Realizing that historically this school does not
accept parental requests for placement, I would like to express my feelings
about what I believe to be an issue that could make a very big difference in
my child's success in the coming year. I would like it to be known that,
after discussion with Mrs. Xyz, we both agree that she would be the most
appropriate teacher for Johnny's needs and that to place him with another
teacher could be cause problems from the outset for him" and then go on
to back up my statements.
I hope that helps. Which reminds me, I have to write some letters for
next year!!!
